Less is more

We're not big breeders ... we started small and now we're MICRO

Going forward, we will only breed on commission for people who want their Fjord foal to get a solid start in life through spending their first year(s) in our socially-functional horse herd and horse-centric environment.

Commissioning your own Fjord youngster

After infrastructure improvements are complete in a few years, we will offer limited opportunities to commission purebred Norwegian Fjord Horse foals from some of our mares.

We will only enter into contracts with people whose philosophies are reasonably congruent with ours in the ways that matter to horses, notably incorporating both some form of clear and ethical two-way communication and a philosophy that considers a horse's emotional state with the goal of good self-regulation, including but not necessarily limited to: Horse Speak®, conscientiously-structured R+ (eg, Shawna Karrasch), Lynn Acton, and/or Emotional Horsemanship®.

If you "do" any of these things, you know exactly why we're imposing that limitation.  If you "do" something you feel is similar, let us know what that is, and we'll dive into learning about it to see if we also think it's similar enough, or if it's something we'll want to incorporate ourselves — we love to learn and improve!  (And, if you don't "do" any of these, we invite you to explore one or more of these potentially life-changing rabbit holes using the links.)

For each commissioned breeding, we'll collaborate with the planned foal's future person to select the best of our available mares and the most complimentary stallion (from those available to us at the time) for the best chance at the desired end result ... and we will be honest if we believe our mares are not likely to produce any "must haves". After the details are hashed out, the contract is signed, and we receive the downpayment, we will embark on breeding arrangements and will raise the resulting foal in our herd and horse-centric, Horse-Speak®-ing environment for up to three years.

If you are considering commissioning a foal, please read:

• Our About Us page if you haven't already
• Our Horsekeeping Practices and Breeding Philosophies page to get more in-depth information about what will be considered in the pairing process, and how the resulting foal will be raised.
• Our Resources page, which includes links for additional information on horsekeeping practices and equipment we use ... or that you might find useful as a new Fjord owner

Then, contact us when you know you want to commit.  Our time and capacity are both limited, so if everything else is equal, first to contact us will receive first priority.
